It’s tucked away, not seen from I-41, but it may be the most traveled road in Washington County.

Pretty much whoever has been anybody in NASCAR has Slinger Speedway as a bucket list to come and race at, track spokesman Todd Thelen says. “It is that unique.”

The Speedway first opened as a dirt track in 1948. The oval wasn’t paved until 1974. And it’s seen the best of the best. Matt Kenseth, the late Dale Earnhardt, Darrell Waltrip, Dale Jarrett and others have all made the pilgrimage to what Thelen calls the “Lambeau Field of NASCAR.”

Slinger’s Sunday season opener is this weekend. Pit gates open at 8:00 AM.
