MILWAUKEE -- This is the time of year when many of us gather documents and file income taxes. But, as you go through the process, it is important to protect your information from getting into the wrong hands. Here is what you can do to keep your information safe:

Many of use computers and other devices for accessing documents or filing a return. It is important to use and update security software on all devices. Also, use strong passwords that contain letters and numbers.

When accessing information online, make sure that you are using secure Wi-Fi networks, and that the websites that you visit are encrypted with a URL that begins with “https”.

Watch out for e-mails or phone calls that try to phish for your personal information. Do not click on links or provide any information by phone without checking things out with a legitimate source.

Keep paper files and documents like W2’s and previous year tax returns in a safe place and out of plain site.

Make a back up copy of items needed for your return.

After your return has been filed, shred documents or delete items that are no longer needed from all devices.
