APPLETON, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s criminal justice department presented findings in Appleton of a year-long study on the Safe Streets Treatment Options Program, or SSTOP.

The program is meant for people who have multiple operating while intoxicated convictions and provides treatment options to help them avoid another conviction.

The program has helped reduce OWI convictions by more than 30 percent, according to the chair of the UW-Milwaukee criminal justice department.

Outagamie and Winnebago counties are the only two counties in the state to have implemented SSTOP.
