It was an almost perfect day for Wisconsin's entrants in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, yet not good enough for any cheesehead competitors to get to the competition's finals.
The three participants from our state, Martius Bautista from Janesville, Veronica Ann Goveas from Menomonee Falls and Nathan Jarrett from La Crosse, each made it through their first attempts at the nationally-televised bee in Washington, D.C. Only Jarrett missed in the second attempt, which eliminated him from the competition.
All those who had perfect scores on Wednesday then had their written test from Tuesday graded.
That eliminated another 121 competitors, including all three from our state.
