A difficult week for law enforcement ended with a special tribute. VMP, a residential facility for older adults, held a public thank you for our men and women of the badge.
"So often we take them for granted," said Tom Lasjic, West Allis Common Council President. "They're there 24/7 for us and we don't appreciate them until we need them."
Milwaukee County Sheriff Richard Schmidt appreciated the invitation after a week where a young Milwaukee Police Officer lost his life.
"When they invited us to celebrate what we do as police and fire, that's really sweet," said Sheriff Schmidt.
"Our residents really depend on our police and fire force and our sheriff department," said VMP's Senior and Community Club Director Jan Schneider. "Today is our way of saying thank you."
Deputy Chief Jason Pooler of the West Allis Fire Department said, "We do this job 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. To have one day a year where the appreciation is shown back means the world to us."
