Japan's Irie makes history
Japan featherweight (125 lbs.) Sena Irie upset reigning world champion Nesthy Petecio of the Philippines on Tuesday, claiming for the host country its first-ever boxing gold medal for a woman.
Irie, who won 5-0, was considered a significant underdog.
U.S. men advance
U.S. featherweight Duke Ragan boxed his way into the finals with 4-1 split decision, winning the second and third rounds on most cards. His opponent for the gold medal bout will be the ROC's Albert Batyrgaziev, who beat Cuba's Lazaro Alvarez, who will take his third bronze medal in as many weight classes.
It wasn't as spectacular as his last bout, in which a right hand staggered an experienced opponent and forced a referee stoppage, but U.S. lightweight Keyshawn Davis clinched a medal by winning his quarterfinals bout. Davis took the third round on all five cards for a 4-1 decision. He'll face Armenia's Hovhannes Bachkov in the semifinals.

Cuban welterweight wins
Roniel Iglesias, who had a gold medal and world title at light welterweight, added a welterweight gold medal to that collection with a unanimous decision win over Great Britain's Pat McCormack.
Iglesias began his major international career with a bronze medal at light welterweight in 2008. He stayed at that weight to win the 2009 world championship and the 2012 gold medal. In 2015, he moved up to welterweight, taking second in the 2017 world championship while being eliminated in the quarterfinals in other events, including the 2016 Olympics.

Men's flyweight: Great Britain's Galal Yafai took out the last remaining seed, Cuba's Yosbany Veitia, in the quarterfinals.
Men's heavyweight: World champion Muslim Gadzhimagomedov of the Russian Olympic Committee handled New Zealand's David Nyika 5-0 in his semifinal bout. His opponent will be Cuba's Julio la Cruz, the 2016 gold medalist and four-time world champion at light heavyweight.
Women's lightweight: Top seed Kellie Harrington of Ireland and world champion Beatriz Ferreira of Brazil rolled to the semifinals with a unanimous decisions.
