(NBC News) There's new evidence a staggering number of Americans are probably paying too much for their prescription drugs.
"67 percent of the population doesn't know or understand that there are tools out there where they can save money on their prescription drugs," says RetailMeNot.com's Sara Skirboll.
RetailMeNot's recent survey of over 1,000 American adults suggests over half the country is on a prescription medication and probably paying too much.
"A lot of people in the country will actually halved their prescriptions, they won't take their prescriptions, they'll take them some days but not the other days, all because of money which is just so unfortunate," Skirboll says.
That's why online discounters like good rx are gaining popularity, and why retailmenot is now offering Rx Saver.
"All you need to do is enter your zip code, enter your prescription name and the website RxSaver.com is going to pull up all the different pharmacies and stores in your area that sell that prescription medication and show you the exact price," Skirboll explains.
She says the discounts are sometimes so deep you can actually save more than when your insurance pays for a prescription.
