SALT LAKE CITY — Teachers in the Salt Lake City school district plan to stage a walkout to protest the Utah State Legislature and demand priority funding for education needs.

In a letter sent to parents, Salt Lake City School District Superintendent Dr. Lexi Cunningham announced classes on Feb. 28 will be a half-day for students.

"With so many teachers anticipated to participate in the walk-out, we will not have the capacity to provide adequate supervision to keep your students safe and learning that afternoon. Accordingly, we need to implement a half-day schedule on Friday, February 28 for all SLCSD schools," Cunningham wrote.

A number of schools will end at 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Teachers are expected to march to the Capitol, where they will call for public education funding to be a top priority in the legislature.
