Companies will start sending out W-2s soon. Once you get all your paperwork in order, you may be able to save money filing your taxes.

If you prefer to have a professional do your taxes, H&R Block recently rolled out up-front pricing. There’s no more walking in with your paperwork and waiting for a quote. It'll usually cost you between $118 and $350 for federal and state returns. But the online software for federal and state will cost you between $30 and $135.

If you've ever wondered if you'll get more money back by using a personal tax preparer than if you did it yourself, the answer is yes, you most likely will. If your taxes are more complicated with mortgages, business costs, itemized deductions, or if you've had a big life change like a divorce, it’s best to get the filing advice.

If those scenarios don’t apply to you, online software is always a good route. You can save yourself the extra money.

Seniors can get free tax preparation through IRS’ Tax Counseling for the Elderly. Also, those who can get help through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program include people who make $54,000 or less, people with disabilities or those who don't speak English fluently.
