MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett is accusing Republican Sen. Ron Johnson of fear mongering with his latest campaign ad that plays off concerns over terrorism.
Johnson released the ad Tuesday, the same night he is slated to give a prime-time speech at the Republican National Convention. Johnson narrates the ad which tries to paint his Democratic opponent Russ Feingold as weak on national security. Johnson names locations of recent attacks, including Nice, France, and concludes by saying the world is too dangerous to elect Feingold.
Barrett said Tuesday in a conference call with reporters he thinks the ad shows Johnson is "panicking" and "fear mongering."
Barrett says Johnson's backing of Donald Trump shows "he's willing to put the safety of our country into the hands of a reality TV star."
