The race to the White House has passed the halfway mark, and the candidates will soon be campaigning in Wisconsin. Former Governor Tommy Thompson is backing a dark horse candidate.
Thompson has spent a lifetime in politics as a governor and cabinet secretary.
"I think it's the most exciting presidential race that any of us have ever witnessed," said Thompson.
He's backing Ohio Governor John Kasich as the guy with the best record and resume to be president.
"What is the big issue in Republican circles; How do we get this expensive government under control? John Kasich has done it," said Thompson.
Thompson thinks the race between Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and Kasich could end with no one crossing the finish line before the GOP convention.
Benson: Are you concerned you have a fractured party and a divided party?
Thompson: It depends on how it's handled.
Thompson says his guy Kasich would have a chance against Trump and Cruz if there is a contested convention, even though Kasich has won only one state so far, his home state of Ohio.
Thompson: It would really be a slap in the face of voters to pick somebody other than one of the three
Benson: Could you support Donald Trump?
Thompson: Yes I could. If he's the nominee I will be enthusiastic, supporting him because I know that anyone one of the three is so far superior and better than Hillary Clinton.
Thompson expects Kasich to make several visits to Wisconsin before the April 5th primary.
