A strange phenomenon is happening in North Carolina as temperatures start to drop.

As some animals hide underground during these months, the alligators in the area are instead freezing themselves in water to survive.

18 American alligators were seen frozen in a swamp at The Swamp Park in eastern North Carolina with only their snouts sticking out of the ice.

The gators were allegedly frozen Monday night and had to wait for the ice to melt Tuesday morning in order to escape.
