Devastated by the cancellation of her graduate recital because of coronavirus concerns, a student violist was invited to perform instead on the Philadelphia Orchestra’s live webcast.

The unique solution came about after the violist, 23-year-old Brooke Mead, posed a question in an orchestra webinar asking the musicians how they dealt with disappointment.

The orchestra’s assistant principal cellist empathized with her plight and made arrangements for Mead to play online instead, allowing her to reach hundreds of classical music fans around the world who otherwise wouldn’t have gotten to hear her play had her original performance gone on at Temple University’s campus theater.
