Mayor Cavalier Johnson has named Adam Procell as Director of Milwaukee’s Office of Community Wellness and Safety.
After spending 25 years in prison for homicide, Procell turned his life around to become a well-known advocate for violence prevention throughout Milwaukee and the state.
“I am very pleased Adam has accepted my offer to lead our frontline violence prevention efforts," Mayor Johnson said. "His new office plays a vital role in making Milwaukee safer, and his knowledge, expertise, and life experience will be a valuable addition.”

Most recently, Procell ran Paradigm Shyft, a consulting firm that works with a variety of partners to improve the justice system. Prior to that he led Partners in Hope, a faith-based prisoner reintegration program. He was also a driving force behind a state bill requiring the Department of Corrections to create a community reentry center.
When asked what’s first on his agenda, Procell said he will listen.
“I feel that any good leader is not going to come in and make immediate changes. I definitely have some ideas,” Procell said. “One thing I’m looking forward to is to add-to, so we will work with people throughout public safety to collaborate and learn.”
Johnson's office admitted the path to this announcement has been unusual. The mayor’s team conducted a national search that brought dozens of candidates from near and far. Three finalists were identified. Residents were then given the opportunity to ask questions and shared priorities. That, too, added to the process, according to Johnson's office.
Procell was a late addition to the mix of candidates; however, he quickly rose to the top. Johnson said he was impressed by him, and expressed confidence others will be, also.
Procell is set to begin his new position before the end of August.
