WAUSHARA COUNTY -- The Waushara County Sheriff's Department is warning people about a new telephone scam.

In a news release, the department says a woman from Plainfield received a phone call from a phone number based in Mexico. On the other end was a sobbing and screaming woman. The victim said a man with a foreign accent called her by name, and told her the screaming woman was her kidnapped mother.

The man demanded money for her release. However, the woman realized it was a hoax since her mother died in 1976.

The woman was shaken, and called the sheriff's department to report the scam. Deputies say this is the first report of this type of scam in the area.
