MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee's new streetcar system 'The Hop' isn't expected to be up and running until November, but the public will get a chance to see inside the vehicles themselves at an open house event next week.
On Friday, June 8, the entire community is invited to board the streetcar vehicles and get a close-up look for themselves. The event is being held at the city's streetcar maintenance facility, located under the I-794 expressway between N. 4th and N. 5th Streets.
Public access to the event will be located at the northeast corner of the facility, near the intersection of N. 4th and W. Clybourn Streets. No advance registration is required.
“This is your chance to be among the first Milwaukeeans to board The Hop,” Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said. “The Hop is an integral piece of the vibrant Milwaukee community we’re building, and I’m thrilled the public will have the occasion to come downtown, get a close-up look, and then visit some of the great businesses along the streetcar route.”
Attendees will also be able to see inside the streetcar maintenance facility and learn about streetcar safety. The streetcar vehicles will be stationary for the event.
Rides on The Hop will be free for the first year, thanks to a 12-year, $10 million sponsorship deal from Potawatomi Hotel & Casino.
