If you've pushed any and all memories of snow away after winter 2018 came to an end, then this refresher on snow safety might be for you.

In your home:

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has a list of Winter Weather Health and Safety Tips on its website. Here are a few things it recommends:

  • Have your furnace checked annually for efficiency
  • Be prepared for power outages with candles, flashlights, fully charged cellphones, blankets, nonperishable foods and more
  • Stay inside during a storm

On the road:

The Brown Deer Police Department tweeted out a safety tip for driving with snowplows near.

They say state laws require drivers to stay at least 200 feet from an active snowplow while traveling at speeds higher than 35 mph. Following too close behind a snowplow could result in a fine of $175 and three demerit points added to your record.

It is legal to pass a snowplow, you are advised to use extreme caution when doing so.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation shares more:

  • Always check highway conditions online before heading out, and make sure to tell someone of your planned travel route and expected arrival time
  • Clear snow and ice from your vehicle's windows, front and rear lights, roof and hood
  • Turn on low-beam headlights to help you see and to help others see you
  • Keep your fuel tank at least half full
  • Check that all vehicular functions are working properly, for example, tires, windshield wipers, battery, lights, etc.
  • Remember that bridges and overpasses can be especially slippery in the winter

Out and about:

  • Bundle up!
  • Dress in layers. Clothing that is wind and water resistant is especially helpful in keeping warm while outside
  • Do not ignore shivering because it is the first sign that the body is losing heat. Persistent shivering is a sign to go indoors

Following all of these tips is the perfect way to look this snowstorm in the face and show it who's boss.
