MILWAUKEE -- A woman was forced to jump out a second-floor window after a flames broke out in an apartment building early Sunday.
The fire happened near 110th and West Hampton.
Neighbors warmed up in ambulances, as firefighters dealt with slick conditions and worked to prevent hoses from freezing.
Jewel Davis and her husband Phillip said they are thankful they got out safely.
Davis said she woke up in her first floor apartment to the smell of smoke.
"When I started to go to the kitchen, the fire just gushed out," she said. "I rang everybody's doorbell in the apartment and it was the one lady upstairs. She couldn't even get out because it spread so quick."
Battalion chief Erich Roden said the woman was sent to a hospital.
"We received word an occupant had to jump to safety upon our arrival," he said. "Fortunately that victim is being treated at the hospital."
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
