WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) -- An Oconomowoc woman will serve life in prison for fatally shooting her husband.

Fifty-four-year-old Amy Van Wagner also was given a 10-year sentence Wednesday for hiding a corpse.

A jury in Waukesha County found Van Wagner guilty of shooting her husband, Stanley Van Wagner, and then trying to make it appear as though he had gone missing. His body was found under a tarp in the couple's basement in May 2015. Prosecutors argued Amy Van Wagner killed her husband in a dispute over finances and then tried to make it appear he was just missing.

"I don't think it's necessary to send a 54-year-old woman to prison forever when she's never been in trouble before and there's no indication that she would be a danger to the community," said John Shiro, Van Wagner's attorney.

In court, Van Wagner asked for extended supervision for the sake of her children. But the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the judge denied her request.

The defense plans to appeal her conviction.

"We will be appealing for sure. I don't think anybody can really believe she's dangerous," said Shiro.
