Millions of drivers will be on the road this weekend for Christmas travel. Thursday is expected to be the busiest day of travel, but drivers are finding a silver lining at the pump.
GasBuddy says gas is about $2.10 per gallon around Wisconsin, but there are plenty of places where it's under $2.
"I'm enjoying the cheap prices," Randy Smart of Franksville said. "I can remember when it was $4 a gallon or more."
It's been a while since gas was that high. However, prices were close to this price a few years ago. In 2016, gas prices were about $2 per gallon in the state on average, but the last time it was this low around Christmas was in 2015.
Gas averaged $1.91 per gallon.
"Pretty good the prices are coming down this low," Tim Prescott of Milwaukee said. "Everybody is enjoying the low gas prices. We all need the help this time of year. This is my Christmas present."
Donny Rios said, "$1.95 per gallon is the cheapest I've seen in the last five years or so. That's pretty sweet, especially when I have to fill this up at least three times."
Rios will spend the holiday weekend on the road. He's not traveling to visit family, but rather moving from Indiana back home to Wisconsin. He'll benefit from filling up his U-Haul with cheaper gas.
"My Christmas is going to be unpacking everything," Rios said. "I'm not even going to be packing any Christmas presents. Just unpacking all of my stuff."
A storm on the East Coast could cause headaches for air travelers this weekend. The storm is expected to pick up in intensity later Thursday.
