A northern Wisconsin school district unanimously voted to discontinue their high school's "Midgets" mascot.
Hurley School District announced Monday that although the mascot is a proud symbol of the community and the school district, it was "increasingly becoming a distraction."
"Additionally in a school district that prides itself on inclusion and making all students and families feel a strong sense of belonging, the mascot sends the wrong message to any student or family who is different" the district said in a statement. "We fully understand that many in the community will disagree with this vote, but we felt the need to take action."
The district will begin work to select a new mascot later this year and intends to include parents, students and staff in the process.
