Wisconsin Democrat introduces proposal to legalize marijuana

Posted

A Wisconsin lawmaker is proposing the legalization of both medical and recreational marijuana as a way to create jobs and generate revenue without increasing taxes.

The plan would allow an individual to grow six marijuana plants for personal use. Any more than that would require a permit.

State Rep. Melissa Sargent is proposing the measure, and she’s no stranger to the topic.

“As many of you know, this is not the first time that I've introduced this bill,” Sargent said. “Quite frankly, I've introduced this bill over the last two legislative sessions, but it's never been more worthy of consideration or more timely.”

Sargent says the plan is about legalizing opportunity and prosperity for the state. Her previous efforts to legalize pot for recreational use have failed.

Twenty-nine states allow the use of marijuana for medical purposes, and eight have legalized recreational use. Gov. Scott Walker legalized possession of a pot extract to treat seizures earlier this year.
