Winter storm strands holiday travelers

Posted

The winter storm is leaving a lot of Christmas visitors stranded in Milwaukee.

The backup is so bad, some airline passengers are being told it could be days before they fly out. Now the race is on for them to re-book.

"The flight today was canceled. The flight for tomorrow is sold out," says Yvonne Garthwait.

Southwest told Yvonne and her husband Richard Garthwaits the soonest they could get them out was January 1st. So instead, they got their money back. It was a $400 refund.

But most one-way tickets for the couple are double that. Plus, they need will need to stay in a hotel and get a rental car. So they are looking for a new plan.

"Driving to Chicago and maybe flying out of O'Hare to Phoenix," says Yvonne Garthwait.

Still, the soonest they can leave will be Tuesday, or more likely Wednesday.

The airport says have been working around the clock since Sunday to keep the runways clear and open. But it is ultimately up to each airline to decide if they will cancel.
