Police took a man into custody Sunday afternoon who is suspected of a crime spree that started with a fatal shooting in West Allis Sunday morning and a drive-by shooting in traffic a few hours later in Sauk County.

Several law enforcement agencies chased a vehicle on I-94 east in Columbia and Dane counties Sunday afternoon. Police say the three people in the car were suspected of shooting at another vehicle in Sauk County.

The pursuit ended on Highway I-39/90/94 near Deforest with police firing shots at the vehicle. The three individuals were taken into custody.

Police say one of the suspects was responsible for a fatal shooting at a West Allis apartment building shortly before 7 a.m.

West Allis police responded to reports of a burglary at the building in the 2300 block of South 92nd Street when they discovered a man identified as 42-year-old Gabriel Sanchez (pictured, right) suffering from a gunshot wound. Sanchez later died from his injuries.

Police say the suspect they were looking was associated with the nearby Epikos Church, and had made threatening statements to a member of the church.

Officers converged on the church to ensure the safety of the congregation.

“They just made an announcement before he was going to preach that something was going on, that it was an emergency, and they played a video sermon. The police were going up and down the stairs,” parishioner Megan Boyer said.

Around 100 people in the neighborhood were forced to stay inside of their homes Sunday morning during the investigation.
