A family of eight safely escaped a duplex fire near 64th and National Avenue early Monday morning.

The fire broke out in the second-floor kitchen around 4:30 a.m. No one was on the second-floor when the fire started.

There were initial reports that someone in the family was trapped, but fire officials on scene say this was not true.
The five adults and three children walked out the home on their own, as well as their two dogs.

Officials say the home will be uninhabitable for a while and that the Red Cross has been called for the individuals.

As of 5:30 a.m. the fire was "close to done" and awaiting investigation.
