WAUWATOSA -- After eight months of waiting, Center Street Bridge in Wauwatosa has opened up for traffic and pedestrians.

Rebuilding the small bridge, which is only 200 feet long, will save residents in the area lots of time.

“Different roads have been closed at different times. The bridge has been closed for eight months and its just different traffic paths for everybody,” said Greg Werry, who lives on West Center Street.

The bridge was demolished and rebuilt in anticipation for the widening of Interstate 41 and US 45.

Wisconsin DOT says the bridge had also reached the end of its life cycle.

While it was only an eight month project, people in the area say it was a big inconvenience.

The bridge serves as a shortcut to get to Mayfair Mall and business along Mayfair Road.

“Now that this bridge is being fixed, we'll be able to get there faster,” said 13-year-old Vincent Her.

The bridge also serves as a link between Witman Middle School and Wauwatosa West High School and during the winter student has to walk along a further pedestrian bridge.
