WAUSAU — Many Wisconsin cities were ranked as some of the country's best cities to retire in for the elderly, but Wausau was top five.

According to a 24/7 Wallstreet study, Wausau was ranked fifth best.

Due to 17% of the population being 65 or older, and access to more than 52 skilled nursing homes per 100,000 seniors, this makes finding care much easier in Wausau than almost anywhere else in the United States.

In addition, the average retirement income is $18,617.

The metro area also has more than 121 assisted living facilities per 100,000 seniors, more than triple the nationwide rate.

Other Wisconsin cities ranked in this study included Madison (11), Fond du Lac (18), Eau Claire (22), Duluth (23), Appleton (25) and Oshkosh-Neenah (28).
