A Washington County Sheriff's deputy is being recognized for an act of kindness.

Deputy Jeff Schwitz recently was taking his break at a local restaurant when he noticed his waitress was upset.

The woman was stopped by an individual during her shift who told her they would not be able to make a cake for her 1-year-old family member's birthday party. The individual returned money for the cake to the waitress and left the restaurant.

Schwitz learned the birthday party was the following day and the waitress would not have time to get a cake before then. She said she asked the individual for the cake weeks ago.

Schwitz then decided to take matters into his own hands and purchase a cake for the woman.

He asked how many people the cake should be for and for the name of the child whose birthday it was.

" ... it's what we do. We help people." — Washington County Sheriff's Deputy Jeff Schwitz

The deputy later returned to the restaurant with the cake, as well as a stuffed cookie resembling "Cookie Monster" after learning the child was a fan of the character.

When thanked by restaurant employees for what he had just done for the waitress, Deputy Schwitz replied, "Did not have anything going on after work and it's what we do. We help people."
