Dylan Patscot, 22, of Wales, Wis. said he’s evacuating Daniel Island in South Carolina as Hurricane Florence gets closer to making landfall on the east coast.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Florence was a Category 4 hurricane, triggering a hurricane watch for all of North Carolina and part of South Carolina, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Florence is expected to hit the Carolinas and Virginia late Thursday or early Friday.

“I was almost kind of ignoring some of the tropical storm warnings in the beginning because we always get the warnings throughout the fall and it always rains a decent amount in the fall anyways,” said Patscot.

The recent Charleston Southern graduate said when Florence went from a Category 2 to a Category 4 Hurricane he couldn’t ignore the size of the storm and the danger it poses.

“Being on an island during the hurricane is not really where I wanted to be,” said Patscot.

Patscot started his 15-hour drive back to Wales Monday night.
