The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on a proposal to change Columbus Park to "Indigenous People's Park" on Thursday.

The proposal follows steps other communities have taken across the country, including making Indigenous People's Day the same day as Columbus Day.

The Park was named after Christopher Columbus in 1956.

The Parks, Energy and Environment Committee approved the name change last month.

The proposal mentions how the Menominee tribe was forced to sell their land along with several other tribes across southern Wisconsin.

The estimated cost for replacing the signs at the park is $9,700.
