The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is lending a hand to students in the Bahamas who may have been affected by Hurricane Dorian.

The university is offering semester tuition and admissions assistance for students who have difficulty accessing records and transcripts. Students will have to apply for the tuition reduction that would end up covering the nonresident portion of tuition at UWM in spring 2020.

If granted tuition, students would need to obtain Wisconsin residency or submit an appeal to determine eligibility for future semesters. The UWM admissions department will work with students applying from the Bahamas to use alternative documents in cases where power outages or communication disruptions may have made it difficult to obtain college or high school transcripts.

UWM will also waive application fees and consider students impacted by Dorian based on what records they can provide. That being said, students may be considered based on unofficial transcripts, test scores and possibly placement tests.

"We are committed to helping students achieve their goals in higher education," said Katie Miota, UWM's chief enrollment officer. "When student's lives are uprooted by natural disaster, we are driven to do anything we can to help. It's in our values and our access mission."

Students who qualify can fill out this form, or contact the appropriate university admissions office via email, social media or phone with reference to UWM's Natural Disaster Admissions Relief.
