Two UW-Madison freshmen will compete to fill the campus-dominated District 8, reported WISC-TV.

The current alderman Zach Wood announced Wednesday in a Facebook post that he would not be seeking re-election. Wood has represented the campus community since 2015.

Two ambitious UW first-year students have since stepped forward to announce their run to fill Woods' vacancy: Avra Reddy, 19, and Mathew Mitnick, 18.

In a Facebook post, Reddy described volunteering on midterm election campaigns and being inspired by the breaking number of women of color running for office to pave her own path to fight for student rights.

Mitnick says he was inspired by both his parents that are public servants. Affordable housing, student engagement, flood prevention and social justice are top priorities for his agenda if elected, reported WISC-TV.
