Truck drives off WIS 794, lands on side street

A car landed on a Bay View street after driving off WIS-794 Thursday. Now, the driver could face several charges, including driving while intoxicated.

Neighbors who saw the wreckage said it could have been deadly.

"They worked hard and long to get this person out. I didn't know if they'd lived or not," said Audra Tempesta, who lives nearby.

Luckily, both the driver and his passenger lived after the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office said the car went off the road going North on 794 at Oklahoma. It rolled down a hill next to the exit, landing on its side on Oklahoma Ave.

MCSO said they got the call around 11:50 p.m. Thursday. The passenger walked away without any injuries, but the driver had to be cut out of the vehicle. He was taken to the hospital, treated, and released.

Tempesta said she heard "tons and tons and tons of sirens that just didn't stop."

She left her house to see what it was and found "right under the viaduct at 794 was totally shut off. Tons of firetrucks, police, sheriffs and one ambulance," she said.

Neighbors said the scene left in the morning was just as shocking.

"The cans and the windshield that I saw them take off is still laying there and the crime tape. I don't know, it's a pretty gnarly scene," described Tempesta.

That scene concerns her and other neighbors.

"I have 3 small kids, you know, it's always unsettling," she said.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office is recommending the district attorney charge the driver for driving while intoxicated, driving without a license and failure to control his vehicle.
