The family of Alvin Cole didn't get the answers they wanted from the Milwaukee County District Attorney Wednesday after learning Wauwatosa Police Officer Joseph Mensah won’t be charged in the teen’s death. However, they said they're not giving up on their push for justice.
Mensah shot and killed 17-year-old Alvin at Mayfair Mall in February. Police said Alvin fired a shot first as officers chased him.
The Cole family walked into the Public Safety Building in Milwaukee with their attorneys, ready to learn the fate of Mensah.
Nearly two hours later, the family emerged to a crowd of supporters, after learning Mensah will not be charged in Alvin’s death.
Alvin’s mom, Tracy, was emotional.
“I want to thank y'all for showing us support during this grieving time,” Tracy said.
However, Tracy noted one thing she can take away from DA John Chisholm’s decision.
“Chisholm did not justify my son's murder by Joseph Mensah,” Tracy said.
Family members said the DA has now failed to provide justice in any of the three fatal shootings committed by Mensah in the past five years.
Alvin's sister, Taleavia said her family should have never been in the position they're in today.
“Joseph Mensah should not be working and should have never been working after Antonio Gonzales,” Taleavia said.
Even though Mensah wasn't charged, the Cole family remains hopeful, Mensah will be fired.
“The fight continues I tell you that. It doesn't end here,” Taleavia said.
The family is now trying to figure out their next steps. It's unclear if that might include a civil lawsuit.
Mensah remains suspended from the Wauwatosa Police Department with pay.
