BROOKFIELD - Shots fired at a the Embassy Suites hotel in Brookfield early Sunday morning left two people injured, and the suspect is still on the run.
"I only heard two pops, and then of course everybody was screaming," Heather Darling said.
Darling is a hotel guest from Iowa. She spent the night at the Embassy Suites with her 8-year-old son and her mother.
“We’re thinking we’re staying somewhere where we’re safe and sound," Darling said.
"I guess it just tells you it doesn’t matter where you are. [A shooting] can happen anywhere," she continued.
Albeit Darling said she only heard the sounds of two gun shots going off, police speculate a half-dozen rounds were fired at hotel guests.
An 18-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were both caught in the crossfire. The woman was shot in the buttocks, and the man was shot in the abdomen --both were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
"It was kind of just a whirlwind I guess really," Darling said.
A whirlwind and a rude awakening for other hotel guests as well. According to police, the shooting is a result of a hotel party gone awry. The suspect physically assaulted a woman during the party. When other guests tried to intervene, the man pulled out a handgun and started firing rounds.
"It's a little scary hearing about this and knowing that this happened at your hotel, but I mean it happens all over," Ariana Jiricka said.
Brookfield police confirm the suspects vehicle was recovered in the city of Milwaukee near his residence. Police have not released the name of the suspect, but they have identified him as a 19-year-old black man from Milwaukee. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Brookfield police department.
