WAUKESHA -- Police say a man is in custody after a domestic-related incident led to an overnight standoff in downtown Waukesha.
It all started in the 400 block of Wisconsin Ave. -- just before 11 p.m. Sunday -- after a 911 call came in from a woman who said she was battered by her boyfriend.
The caller told police there has been a history of domestic violence and her boyfriend was known to be extremely violent using weapons in the past.
When police arrived at the scene, the woman exited her home and met with officers. Police said she had “obvious visible injuries.”
Police established probable cause to arrest the man for domestic abuse-related charges – but he refused to exit the home.
Officers negotiated with the suspect for several hours to surrender. As a precaution, police evacuated an apartment building and nearby homes to a Waukesha Metro Transit Bus.
With the assistance of the Waukesha Police Department Tactical Unit, oleoresin capsicum (OC Spray) was deployed into the residence. The man came out of the home and was taken into custody without incident.
No officers, citizens or the suspect were injured.
Police say is no danger to the public and their investigation is ongoing.
