The polls are now open in Tuesday’s Spring Primary Election.

A three-way primary for Superintendent of Public Instruction is on the ballot across Wisconsin.

Incumbent Tony Evers is being challenged by Lowell Holtz and John Humphries.

The top two vote-getters will advance to April’s General Election.

Voters may also see some local races on their ballots based on where they live.

Turnout on Tuesday is expected to be low.

“In the last two decades, there have been three Spring Primaries for Superintendent of Public Instruction, in 2001, 2005 and 2009. For those primaries, the average turnout has been 5.9 percent of the voting-age population,” said Reid Magney, of the Wisconsin Elections Commission, in a news release.

“In the same period, there were five primaries for Supreme Court Justice, averaging 7.3 percent turnout,” Magney said.

In the Village of Whitefish Bay, Deputy Clerk Caren Brustmann said she expects to hit about 10 percent turnout among registered voters.

“It will be very slow,” Brustmann said.

She said voters should “be in and out real quick” because of the lack of races on the ballot.

By contrast, turnout in November’s presidential election topped 50 percent there, Brustmann said.

Brustmann emphasized, just like in November, voters will need to present a valid photo ID at the polls.

Voters coming in and out of the polling place at the Whitefish Bay Public Library on Tuesday morning said they felt it was important to vote – even in an election in which low turnout is predicted.

Voter Jean Kies said she thinks education is an important issue.

“It’s our future. We need a well-educated workforce that leads us in a good direction,” Kies said. “So it’s really important people turn out and vote today.”

Tom Williams, also a voter, said he wishes more people were taking an interest in Tuesday’s primary.

“Education is the most important thing any community does,” he said.

The polls close at 8 p.m. tonight.
