MILWAUKEE — Real-estate property taxes affect everyone, but Wisconsinites tend to feel it more than others.

According to a Wallethub study, Wisconsin has the fifth-highest real-estate property taxes in the United States. The average American household spends $2,279 on real-estate property taxes for their homes each year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

As for annual taxes on a home priced at the state's median value ($169,300), Wisconsin pays $3,286. This brings the effective real-estate tax rate to 1.94 percent.

The highest real-estate taxes in the country are found in New Jersey, at $7,840 per year on a home priced at the state's median value ($321,000).

The lowest real-estate taxes are found in Hawaii, at $1,529 per year. The average home costs more than a half-million dollars there.
