MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee did not receive a federal grant to extend the streetcar system to Fiserv Forum, according to our partner, the Milwaukee Business Journal.
City officials had proposed to start service there by summer 2020, when Milwaukee might host the Democratic National Convention.
The extension would run mainly on Vel R. Phillips Avenue between St. Paul Avenue and the arena on Juneau Avenue, according to the Milwaukee Business Journal.
Officials projected the extension to cost $40 million.
The city's application was one of 851 for a competitive U.S. Department of Transportation grant program, according to our partner.
The lone Wisconsin winner is for rehab work along Highway 29 in Brown County. That award was for $19.8 million.
Without the federal grant money, the extension cannot be built.
City officials remain optimistic about the project. If that extension eventually is completed, future extensions are proposed farther north along North Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to the Bronzeville neighborhood at North Avenue.
