People in one north Milwaukee neighborhood are fed up after shots rang out at a park at 26th Street and Atkinson Avenue Friday night.
“We're tired of it," Shawn Moore said.
Deidre Greer, who lives along 26th Street, said she and her children were inside the living room watching television when a bullet hit their house.
Greer believes this could have resulted in another innocent life lost by Milwaukee’s gun violence.
Residents said on Friday, June 4, a group of men started gathering at the park in the Gardens Home Square area. At about 10:15 p.m., cars pulled up and moments later a fight broke out with gun shots being fired. Police said a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old were shot but not seriously hurt.
"I went straight up stairs and looked at my surveillance system to see if I could find anything that was happening and sure enough caught everything on the video,” James Cocroft said.
Cocroft said he has cameras up precisely because of the type of activity going on around his house and at the park. Residents said Friday night's shooting could have ended tragically.
"It could have definitely have caught anyone of us in this living room,” Greer said.
Greer has four children. Thankfully, the bullet got lodged in this closet and did not hurt any of them.
“The only thing it took was for the bullet to come through the wall and my kids to be coming up the stairs or down the stairs,” Greer said.
The family moved in just a few months ago and the children were excited about playing in the park.
“It's always something going on over there and you just never know,” Greer said.
Many residents are asking for police to beef up their presence while they work on a neighborhood watch.
“We don't want this park to become a haven for drugs or violence. We want the kids out here playing; we want the families out here and enjoying the park,” Moore said.
Police said the men that were shot drove themselves to the hospital. So far no arrests have been reported.
