"The number of crazy drivers out there is overwhelming.”
That's what the chief of police in a small Dane County community told theWisconsin State Journalabout speeders and the things his officers are seeing on area roads. He adds, 'it's nutty out here.'
The Journal looked at 450,000 state and municipal speeding convictions from 2013 until 2015. Here’s what they found:
- Nearly 1,600 were found guilty of doing 100 miles an hour or faster, some getting ticketed in areas where the posted limit was 30.
- 2,700 were convicted of speeding in a 15 or 20 mile per hour school zone, a school crosswalk with kids present or by a bus loading or dropping off students.
With police focused on more aggressive speeders, the Journal says there's now more latitude for mild lead-footers: just over one percent of convictions were handed out to those going up to nine miles an hour over the limit.
Speeding citations are up by seven percent in 2015 and are expected to top that total in 2016.
