MILWAUKEE - An historic vote. For the first time, The Vice President of the United States was the deciding vote in a cabinet pick's confirmation.
By a 51-50 margin, Betsy DeVos is the next Secretary of Education.
The DeVos confirmation has left many public school teachers uneasy, not knowing how Wisconsin may be impacted by her pro stance on school choice.
Though she has not spent one day in her new position, the Milwaukee Teacher's Association is ready to fight, they say, for taxpayers and their students.
"Private charters and vouchers take money out of the public school system, and it hurts the students that are left in the public schools. It drains their public system away," said Kim Schroeder, MTA President.
The president of Messmer Catholic Schools believes they've been able to open opportunities for many parents who otherwise could not afford to put their child in their schools.
"For parents of modest to low incomes, those options hadn't been available until the existence of school choice," said James Piatt, President of Messmer Catholic Schools.
We also reached out to the superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools - she has not replied to our request for comment on the DeVos confirmation.
