TOWN OF BURLINGTON, Wis. -- Two people were taken to the hospital after their single-engine plane crashed in the Town of Burlington Sunday, according to sheriff's deputies.

Deputies were called to the scene at about 2:40 p.m. Sunday, where they found the pilot and a passenger with life-threatening injuries. Both people had to be removed from the plane, and were taken to the hospital via Flight for Life.

According to a news release from the Racine County Sheriff's Office, witnesses at the scene told deputies the plane had just taken off, and "was having a difficult time gaining altitude."

After the plane narrowly missed a tree, it crashed into a residential neighborhood, nearly hitting the home pictured above.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have both been notified of the crash, and will handle the investigation.

We don't know the status of the two crash victims at this time. Check back often for more updates.
