MILWAUKEE -- Living up to its name, the Sojourner Family Peace Center is a refuge for families seeking freedom from domestic violence.
"This center is really about holding a light to families in their darkest times. To remind them they are worthy and deserve respect. And that is why we are here, to help people walk that journey towards healing."
Executive Director Carmen Pitre shows off the new facility now located on Walnut Street - a labor of love she shares with so many other partners in the community.
"Carmen has had this vision for a very long time," said Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele. "Seeing this kind of collaboration is a statement that this society cares, and not in a back burner way. "
The multi-million dollar center was funded by public and private dollars. Families will not only have a safe and secure place to stay, but they will also have access to support services under one roof.
"The Sojourner Family Peace Center is really bringing in all the elements of the fight against domestic violence, you have the providers here, you got Children's Hospital,the police department, the district attorney's office," said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.
