The Racine Police Department is alerting the public of a new scam in which callers claim to be members of the department.
A citizen filed a fraud complaint in which they detailed receiving a call from the same number as the Racine County Communications Center.
"On occasions where law enforcement officials have active arrest warrants or otherwise seek payment of fines or forfeitures, the purchase of gift cards is never an acceptable method of payment," said Racine police in a statement. "Any solicitation of this nature should be immediately regarded as fraudulent activity and should be reported to law enforcement immediately."
Police are investigating the scam and ask that anyone with additional information call the Racine Police Department Investigations Unit at 262-635-7756. Anyone who wishes to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 262-636-9330, or through the app.
Caller ID spoofing schemes have been used to mimic other government agencies in the past as well.
