Army captain shares Memorial Day message

Posted
Jason Church has no regrets joining the U.S. Army, service is in his blood.

“When you are serving your country it is kind of like writing a blank check to the American people some pay time of service, some pay losing limbs some of us pay the ultimate price,” said Church.

The retired Army captain would soon learn his sacrifice would be losing both his legs during a tour in Afghanistan. He speaks to a crowded auditorium of New Berlin Eisenhower students he shares how he overcame his injury and persevered.
“I hope the message they get is that they can power through,” said Church.

Max Maier, a junior in high school, was quite impressed not only with Church's courage but his unselfish commitment to service.

“When he said he lost both his legs and kids are complaining that teachers are on them and coaches are on them and how we are not handling adversity very well,” said Maier. “It just really opens my mind and lets me see that I should not take things for granted.”
Church, a Purple Heart recipient, has been sharing his story with hundreds of kids across the state. He hopes to motivate a generation that all things are possible.

“When I look out into the crowd, I was them 9 years ago,” said Church. “That is the one thing I like to do in my message is give them something they can take away and apply to their everyday life.”
