Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner's border wall funding idea

There has been more than a year of discussion over the idea floated by President Trump about building a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Of course, the Trump plan has, through his own words, involved getting Mexico to pay for the wall. He backed up on that idea back in January.

Menomonee Falls Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner is pitching the plan to have money forfeited by drug traffickers to increase security on that border, which could include a wall or other physical barrier, as he says on his site.

"The Mexicans pay for the wall, as the President has called for it," explained Sensenbrenner - but in a different way than perhaps expected by the public.

"It has been estimated that the total drug trade from Mexico runs between $19 billion and $29 billion/year. If we're able to seize half of that amount, we can pay for the wall in two, two and a half years."

He said he is not in favor of tariffs toward Mexican imports.

"I don't like the idea of a border adjustment tax. We tax imports. That's just going to be passed on to American consumers."

Sensenbrenner also said he is hopeful that President Trump will be presenting an alternative to the Affordable Care Act on Tuesday night during his speech.

"One of the difficulties we've had is to have the White House settle on what they want. I am hopeful we will get that information, maybe tonight when the President addresses the Joint Sessions of Congress," said Sensenbrenner.

"The American people need to know what the President and Republican Congress will be proposing."

In response, Brandon Weathersby of the Democratic Party of Wisocnsin shared this statement:

"After more than three decades in Congress, Rep. Sensenbrenner is completely out of touch with his district. Instead of working to bring jobs to his part of Wisconsin, he's wasting time supporting an immigration policy that makes us less safe and trying to take away health care from millions of Wisconsinites. The people of our state deserve far better representation in Washington."
