The American Red Cross currently has a less than a three-day supply of type O blood available for patient emergencies and medical treatments.
Red Cross says this time of year is difficult as influenza cases increase across the country and winter weather threatens to cancel blood drives. Because of this, they are extending an urgent call for donors of all blood types to give blood and platelets.
Type O positive blood is the most transfused blood type and can be given to Rh-positive patients of any blood type. Only 7% of the population in the United States has type O negative blood, but it can be transfused to patients with any blood type.
The Red Cross must collect nearly 13,000 blood donations and more than 2,600 platelet donations every day to be able to efficiently care for patients.
To make an appointment to give blood or platelets visit the Red Cross' website. or call 1-800-733-2767.
