A major apartment development near downtown Racine is expected to inject hundreds of new people into the community.

Mayor Cory Mason said the Common Council approved the plan for the @North Beach apartments, by developer Royal Capital Group, last week.

"It'll be an investment of a little more than $50-million," Mason said. "There will be about 250 units."

Crews are expected to break ground this spring. Mason hopes tenants will begin moving in next year.

"It's been over 20 years since we've had a development of this size in the downtown area," Mason said. "It's an exciting thing."

The planned site of the apartments, at Michigan & Hamilton, is just steps from Racine's downtown.

At nearby businesses like Uncorkt wine bar, local entrepreneurs are enthused about the potential for new customers and increased foot traffic in the area - especially on weekends.

"We'll have a lot more people in downtown Racine, and this will really change the feel here," said Tony Bigonia, owner of Uncorkt. "We'll see a lot of them on Friday and Saturday nights."

"We're looking forward to it," he added.

The @North Beach development will consist of two apartment buildings. But Mason noted there's still space to expand west of the site, and hopes the developers will decide to do so in the future.
