RACINE -- The police and fire commissioner for the city of Racine has resigned after public scrutiny of some social media posts.
The mayor confirmed Friday that J. Mark Freeman resigned in order to protect the appearance and reality of the commission's unbiased decision-making.
Freeman is a pastor at Second Missionary Baptist Church. The Racine Journal Times reports he's been under fire after social media posts from his accounts came to light. The newspaper reports one post depicts a police officer in a pointed white hood aiming a gun at a black youth.
Mayor John Dickert appointed Freeman to the commission in April. The Racine Police Association and the Staff Officer's Association had been seeking to remove Freeman and said they appreciated his decision to step down.
